You Know What Happens When You Assume–Especially with Your Eligibles

Last week, I conducted a Grassroots Advocacy Leadership Training program in beautiful Columbia, South Carolina.  The participants were dentists and dental students.  Two major revelations came to mind that are worth sharing.  Today I’ll share the first.  Stay tuned for the second.

First, don’t assume that because you are going to South Carolina (a state the President lost) two days after the inauguration of President Obama that there won’t be many post-inaugural revelers on your plane.  It was packed, and included mayors, state lawmakers and at least one Congressman.

That’s when it hit me.

We need to remember that no state is all red or all blue.

There is a healthy amount of diversity among voters in EVERY state.  Of course, one party may tend to carry a state more than another, but that does not mean that everyone in the state–or district– is a member of that party.  The same is true of your PAC eligible employees or members.

Don’t assume that, because your PAC eligibles work for a conservative corporation or live in a state that is more red, they are equally politically conservative.

The only linkage with ALL PAC eligibles you can truly count on is the business case you make for your PAC– not necessarily the political case.
